Impossible win for local surfers

Two Torquay surfers have used their local knowledge to win the Victorian Longboard Titles at Point Impossible over the weekend.

Angela King and Will Cousins surfed near-perfect 1m waves to victory in their respective finals of the last round of the titles on Sunday.

Cousins bested Barwon Heads local and current Australian logger champion Ben Considine to earn a hard-fought win in excellent conditions.

He posted rides of 8.33 and 7.40 for a total of 15.77 to beat Considine by just over a point and win the overall championship.

“I’m stoked to win the state title in such awesome waves,” he said.

“It was firing out there and I was lucky to get some good ones.”

The Mornington Peninsula’s Rhys Collins and Armstrong Creek’s Matthew Robertson came in third and fourth respectively.

In the women’s King won a nailbiter by .7 of a point over Anglesea’s Samantha Suendermann to claim the state championship.

She has now won two consecutive state titles and will look to continue her red-hot form at the Australian titles later this year.

“I’m very happy to win my second open women’s state title in a row,” King said.

“All the ladies were surfing so well this weekend so a credit to the girls for all surfing at such a high level.

“(I’m) stoked that I got to surf all weekend whilst the husband looked after the kids.”

Fellow Torquay local Emma Webb came third while Carrum’s Eglantine Ball came fourth.

Cousins also took the open men’s logger, while Jan Juc’s Greg Brown took out the over 40 logger and over 55 and 50 longboard events, including a 9.83 wave of the day.

Other local winners included Torquay’s Bob Smith, Ocean Grove’s Matty Wright and Bellbrae’s Hugh Taylor.
