THE REGION’S top Anglican bishop will run a special service this weekend to pray for the peace and welfare of Indians in Australia after recent allegations of racial violence.
Philip Huggins will lead the prayer at St Peters Ocean Grove on Sunday as men in Geelong and Melbourne face charges of assaulting Indian taxi drivers.
Bishop Huggins said he hoped Indians could find peace within the community.
“We’ve all become aware of the recent attacks against members of the Indian community in Australia and their anxiety and their families’ anxiety,” he said.
“What can we do? We can pray for peace and welfare and try to offer better hospitality to the Indian community.”
Bishop Huggins encouraged Indians to attend the service as an “important part of the community”.
“Indians are welcome, whatever their faith background,” he said.
“They’re an absolutely important part of the community. A number of their families have made great sacrifices for them to be here and want them to do well.”
The service begins 9.30am at Ocean Grove Anglican Church, Draper Street.
