ONE hundred Shell workers were evacuated from the oil company’s Corio refinery after a major fuel leak early Wednesday morning.
CFA and Shell firefighters took more than four hours to contain the leak of toxic unrefined petrol after an alarm sounded at 5 am.
“No-one was injured in the incident and the situation was quickly brought under control – with the all clear sounded around 9.30am,” spokesman Paul Zennaro said.
“The refinery continues to manufacture fuels, and Shell does not expect any market impact.
“In line with standard procedure the company will conduct an investigation into the cause of the incident.”
