Tribute to patriarch a hockey family affair

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

Hockey is in the blood of the Climpson family.
A game last weekend featured three generations in a tribute to the recent passing of the family patriarch, Stephen Climpson.
The club believes it was the first time three generations of one family had played together for one team in Hockey Geelong’s 100-year history, being celebrated this year.
The game was all the more remarkable because it also included four father-son combinations.
Hockey Geelong president Alan Climspon, his son Daniel and grandson Jake made up a double father-son combination themselves.
Alan’s brother Peter and his two sons, Joshua and Sam, were joined by Phillip Frost and his son, Pearce, and Paul Benham and son Lachlan, Alan explained.
“Us older guys are here to help the development of some of the younger players so they can get in and have senior experience – the kids played well, it was us older guys that got found out a bit, though,” he laughed,” Alan laughed.
“We played against a fellow club side and there was a big build-up of words through the week.
“It was a pretty fierce match because somehow it’s a bigger rivalry against a fellow club side but we got flogged 7-0.
“Regardless of the result, it was a nice touch to be able to celebrate the passing of our father, grandfather and great grandfather.”
