College band to blow away crowd

Melissa Shirley and David Bowden are shining their brass instruments and practicing their chords as they prepare to compete in this year’s Powercor Star Search grand final.
Melissa and David are part of Christian College’s VCE Brass Group, which was also a grand finalist last year.
“We’ve really come a long way since last year and can’t wait to be on the Costa Hall stage competing again,” David said.
Star Search showcases the best local performers, with this year’s grand final and public concert at Costa Hall this month promising to be a glittering event.
Star Search is organised by Rotary Club of Highton.
Star Search committee member Bill Rush said proceeds from this year’s event would help Rotary Club of Highton to continue its work helping others in need.
“Our club supports many local community projects as well as Rotary International’s work to eliminate polio, prevent malaria and assist those in need during emergencies,” he said.
First prize in each category is $1000, while second and third place-getters receive $500 and $300 respectively. Prizes are also included for reaching the grand final, for promising performers and for overall winners in each category.
Star Search grand final starts 7.30pm May 29 at 7.30pm at Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus Costa Hall.
Tickets, costing $20 or $15 for concession card holders or $55 for a family of four, are available by phoning Rotary on 5278 2682.
The Independent is a Star Search sponsor.
