New lead ‘fires up’ gun search on Great Ocean Road

By Luke Voogt

Police hunting killers who shot dead a 22-year-old Keysborough man in 2017 searched for evidence on the Great Ocean Road yesterday following a new lead.

Investigators this week forensically linked a firearm in their possession to the fatal shooting of Muhamed Yucel on 2 May 2017.

Mr Yucel was shot dead while playing computer games in the garage of a Church Road house about 9.55pm.

Bullets struck the 22-year-old in the chest and he died at the scene.

Two other Keysborough men, aged 23 and 22 at the time of the incident, received single gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.

Police believed the shooting was a case of mistaken identity and linked it to a dispute between outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Forest Fire Management Victoria began burning grass at Eastern View Beach near Lorne about 1pm yesterday to assist police is the search for evidence related to the firearm.

Victoria Police spokesperson Natalie Webster said the burn would clear grass, making it easier for police to search for the new evidence.

But Ms Webster declined to reveal what evidence police expected to find, saying that doing so could compromise the search.

Traffic management personal shut one lane of the Great Ocean Road as firefighters conducted the burn throughout the afternoon.

Last month Homicide Squad investigators joined with Muhamed’s family to appeal publicly for information.

Witnesses saw a dark coloured 4WD or similar vehicle leaving the scene on the night of the shooting.

The number of people in the vehicle at the time of the shooting was unknown, Ms Webster said.

Detectives have information a grey Toyota Corolla may have been in the area at the time.

They renewed their appeal for anyone with information on the incident or who saw either car in the area to phone Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.
