Roy Orbison tribute band The Big O and Friends is currently recording their first single, Blue Rain, bringing to life 25 years worth of tours across Australia celebrating the American singer/songwriter’s musical contribution.
Frontman John Wells explained that while his music sounds simple, it’s actually quite involved.
“Roy Orbison’s songwriting is just amazing and it’s quite varied. He never wrote the same type of song twice,” he said.
“Our show is a tribute to the music. It’s by no means an impersonation. We play the songs pretty authentically but there’s a current edge to it.”
Mr Wells performs alongside eight-piece band The Mercuries who bring a “live, spontaneous feel to the songs,” he said.
The Mercuries consists of highly experienced musicians, with decades of experience in the industry.
“The eight-piece band gives the show some depth. It’s visually entertaining.
“The first 50 minutes pays tribute to bands like ELO, Chris Isaak and Bob Dylan who worked with Orbison and then the next 75 minutes is dedicated to the Big O himself. It’s a rocky and fun night.“
The Big O and Friends’ single is due to be released later this year. Their next local show is on 6 February at 8.30pm at Gateway Hotel, Corio.
