FINALLY FRIDAY: Squeezing Juice from a Stone

ERIN PEARSON
LADIES, he’s single, looking for love and performing on the Surf Coast next weekend.
Bluejuice front man Jake Stone spoke to the Independent from the back seat of his touring van last week with an air of excitement about his pending visit.
The band would promote new album Company this time around while taking in the region’s sun and surf, Stone said.
“We can’t wait to have a bit of a mini holiday while we’re in Torquay. We’ve been down a few times before and all love the surf,” he said.
“The Australian coastline is a great place.”
Stone said the band’s latest album had grown into something bigger and better than initially expected.
“We’re at a really fun level with the band at the moment and have grown into eight pieces.
“We’ve added a guitar and other things, making our new tunes better than ever before.
“It’s certainly a surreal feeling to know a song you sat in your room and wrote at some odd hour of the night can become something everyone knows.”
Stone attributed the band’s growing popularity to the success of hit singles Broken Leg and Ain’t Telling The Truth.
The recognition of Bluejuice’s four top-100 singles had provided the impetus for growth, he said.
“We’ve got eight pieces and backing tracks this time around, which is the best thing for us to do at the moment,” he said.
“It just came at the right time for us because we hadn’t done something we had been completely happy with.”
Despite the band’s uneasiness with past productions, Stone said Bluejuice had stuck with its self-deprecating lyrics on the new album.
“Our lyrics are usually about making fun of ourselves, which is very Australian,” he laughed.
“The issues are serious, like relationship problems and so forth, but usually cannot be resolved, so we poke fun at them.
“I think our fans can relate to that.”
Bluejuice plays at Torquay Hotel this Friday night.
