A GROUP of disadvantaged women gained a new lease on life this week as part of a Journey to Work project.
The 20 women aged 16 to 25 were treated to make-overs and motivation to build their confidence and chances of finding jobs.
BacLinks manager Sheree Holdsworth said many participants had left school early.
“Their socially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds pose significant barriers to them seeking and gaining employment,” Ms Holdsworth said.
“The young women receive professional presentation advice, including assistance in selecting work wear along with hair and makeup lessons from The Gordon.
“They also receive career guidance and participate in several workshops designed to build their self-esteem.
Ms Holdsworth said BacLinks’ second annual Journey to Work had a number of positive outcomes.
“Last year 13 long-term unemployed young women participated, with eight starting work, three beginning training and two others began counselling in an effort to improve their lives.”
Ms Holdsworth said the program needed donations of “good quality” corporate clothing and accessories.
Donors could phone 5249 8989.
