FINALLY FRIDAY: Jury’s wild ride

By CHERIE DONNELLAN

THE Soul Rectifiers gigs are like “rollercoaster rides”, according to vocalist and guitarist Wayne Jury.
“Sometimes we go to places that get a bit scary,” Jury said of the improvisational skills among the jazz/soul sextet’s members.
“That’s what makes it so exciting.”
Jury plays in the band alongside keyboardist and alto saxophone player Tim Neal, bassist Rob Gador, drummer Danny McKenna, tenor sax player Ian Hergstrom and trombonist Rex Foord.
Jury believed he and his bandmates shared a “passion” for jazz, soul and rhythm and blues.
But finding time for all six to rehearse together while juggling seperate family commitments and roles in other bands was a challenge, he said.
At least the sporadic nature of The Soul Rectifiers’ gigs suited the highly “improvisational style” of jazz, Jury observed.
He said punters who attended the bands’ gig at Ocean Grove’s Piping Hot Chicken Shop next month could enjoy an “intimate live experience”.
Jury most enjoyed “communicating” with small audiences at venues such as the chicken shop, he said.
The Soul Rectifiers’ music told stories about “love, life and death”, taking audiences on “real adventures”, he said.
Jury mused that jazz offered music enthusiasts a chance to find a “real connection” among the many “superficial” things consuming contemporary lives.
However, The Soul Rectifiers’ gigs were a lot of fun, too, he said.
“We plan some things in our gigs but a lot of the [set list] is open.
“Sometimes there are sections in songs that one or a couple of us might go on playing for five minutes – they’re really improvisational.”
Jury praised the skills of his bandmates.
“I personally just love the pleasure of playing live with other accomplished musicians.”
