POLICE believe they have solved the mystery of a silver booty discovered on a Torquay beach this week.
A woman found the silver ingots, weighing about 10kg, in a bag at Point Danger before handing them in to authorities on Monday.
On the current silver value they were worth about $6500.
Collectors regularly find plenty of gold rings, coins and watches on local beaches with metal detectors but the ingots had police scratching their heads.
Then a Melbourne couple provided investigators with clues to the silver’s owner while simultaneously resolving a missing-person case.
The western suburbs family was concerned their 28-year-old son had gone missing. They also knew he had the ingots, which were inside a sports bag.
The puzzle came together when police in a squad car spotted the missing man as he wandered the Great Ocean Road between Anglesea and Torquay.
Police said investigations were ongoing but it was unlikely to end in a case of finders keepers for the honest local who discovered the stash.
