Twitter’s cull of fake accounts has certainly taken a toll on celebrities, especially the biggest name in Geelong.
While some of the world’s best-known celebrities lost many more followers, few could measure up by percentage to the massacre inflicted on former mayor Darryn Lyons.
Huge stars like Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry lost over one million followers each, but that was only two to three per cent of their Twitter base.
In contrast, our Darryn watched 500,000-plus fly out the window, more than 50 per cent of his followers.
Ouch!
But despite the loss, our man of the marvellous Mohawk still claims the largest Twitter fan-base of Geelong’s biggest names by far.
For example, Cats star Gary Ablett Jnr has 152,000 while actor Guy Pearce boasts a paltry 23,000. And then there’s incumbent mayor Bruce Harwood with … 76!
So regardless of his losses, Daz certainly still has a Twitter to crow about!
Speaking of Mayor Harwood, at a “briefing” this week to spruik his recent European tour he revealed that Air Asia offered him a lifeline out of criticism for his jet-setting ways.
The mayor uncharitably dubbed ’Bruce All-Flighty’ stopped into Kuala Lumpur on his way back from Europe.
Three hours into discussions Air Asia execs said they expected him back a fortnight later for the launch of the airline’s Avalon Airport service.
“I thought, ’Crikey I’ve got to go back in two weeks this won’t go down well’,” Bruce revealed.
But Air Asia offered to “look after” him with flights “in the front of the plane, not the back“ and accommodation too.
“They knew I’d been under the scrutiny of the media and the community,” Bruce said candidly.
“So I said, ‘Thanks but we can’t accept that’.”
Well, it’s easy to be honourable when ratepayers cover the extra $1900 instead!
