A LITTLE bit of China came to Torquay College this week in the form of 42 students and seven teachers from a visiting Chinese sister school.
Principal Pam Kinsman said the inter-cultural exchange followed a Torquay school group visiting China last year.
“The kids have had a ball, going to Anglesea golf course to see the kangaroos and enjoying a traditional Aussie pub meal,” Ms Kinsman said.
“Not many primary schools have this experience, so it’s pretty unique for our grade five and six kids. It’s been an unusual but exciting experience for them.”
The students, from Dong Feng Dong Primary School, in the city of Guangzhou, intermingled at school through a variety of art and sporting activities and with host families.
“Torquay tends to be very mono-cultural, so it’s really important to engage with countries from the Asia Pacific region and build intercultural understanding,” Ms Kinsman said.
“The students have been exchanging email addresses because the Chinese kids develop excellent English skills and can communicate effectively.
“They could start lifelong friendships.”
Ms Kinsman said she hoped another group from Torquay would be able to visit China in the next two years.
