Police yesterday charged an 18-year-old Grovedale woman over claims she had been raped during a night out in Geelong last week
The teenager had told police that two men attacked her in Moorabool Street’s Belcher Arcade about 2am on March 8.
But Sexual Crimes Unit Detective Acting Sergeant Stuart Dawson said her statement didn’t stack up.
“Throughout the investigation there were anomalies in her version of events and it was determined that the allegations were false,” Det Sgt Dawson said.
“She has been charged on summons with causing a false report to be made to police.”
The region’s top cop, Divisional Superintendent Andrew Allen, said the allegedly false allegation had unfairly tarnished Geelong’s recent safety record.
Supt Allen will today address a forum on city safety.
