Another attack in city area

Hamish Heard
Detectives are hunting two men who allegedly raped a teenager in a central Geelong arcade early yesterday morning.
Police said the 18-year-old girl was walking along Moorabool Street about 2am when brazen attackers pushed her into the entrance of Belcher Arcade where she was sexually assaulted.
Nearby workers were shocked to find their places of work cordoned off with police tape yesterday morning as Sexual Crimes Squad and forensic investigators scoured the crime scene for clues.
The attack was the second alleged brutal rape in central Geelong since December.
Earlier this week Police Commissioner Christine Nixon was reported to have said Geelong residents felt safe amid falling crime rates.
Melbourne Sexual Crimes Squad Detective Sergeant Stuart Dawson was yesterday trying to piece together the crime.
“I’m not at liberty to discuss the detail of the allegations but it was a certainly a brazen attack,” he said.
Det Sgt Dawson said the girl was not badly injured in the attack.
However, another policeman at the scene said she had been admitted to hospital.
“We were notified of a job early this morning in relation to an allegation of sexual assault that has occurred here in Moorabool Street,” Det Sgt Dawson said.
“It appears that two males have pushed a female victim into an alcove where a sexual assault has taken place.”
Det Sgt Dawson said the attackers fled in an unknown direction after the assault.
He believed that a taxi driver could hold the key to identifying the men.
“Certainly, if there’s any taxi drivers that have come here and done any pick-ups or drop-offs, we’d appreciate if they could pass on any relevant information to Crimestoppers.”
Police were unable to gain a description of the attackers when the Independent went to press yesterday.
They hoped footage from central Geelong’s security camera network would help identify the attackers.
Det Sgt Dawson urged anyone who witnessed suspicious behaviour in the area at the time of the attack to phone 1800 333 000.
