A Highton man remains in psychiatric care after resisting arrest in dramatic scenes on Pakington Street this week, police said on Thursday.
The 35-year-old was allegedly involved in a series of car collisions before leaving his vehicle and displaying “unusual behaviour” on the Geelong West street.
Police and witnesses feared for the safety of a one-year-old in his arms at the time.
Police said the man was still in a psychiatric unit at University Geelong Hospital’s Swanston Centre on Thursday.
Sergeant Michael Egan said the man “ran toward” police when they approached him about 4pm on Monday.
He “motioned as though he was going to throw the child”, Sgt Egan said.
“The man resisted arrest and capsicum spray was deployed.
“Once arrested he was brought back to the Geelong Police Station and police assessed his suitability for an interview.
“Police were concerned by his behaviour and his psychiatric state so he was admitted to the Swanston Centre on Monday afternoon.”
A number of witnesses saw the incident, Sgt Egan said.
Waurn Ponds police have asked for more witnesses to come forward if they had information that could assist investigations.
