Deaths down, says animal shelter

DEATHS at Geelong Animal Welfare Society have fallen 550 for dogs and 1160 for cats on the previous financial year, according to the shelter’s annual report.
The report said the society euthanased 283 of 2869 dogs that entered the centre in 2011/2012, or 10 per cent.
The centre euthanased 833 euthanased from 3119 arrivals, or 27 per cent, the previous year.
The society put down 1244 of 2482 cats in 2011/2012, or 50 per cent. The previous year’s figures were 2406 of 3227 cats euthanased, or 75 per cent.
Cat adoptions climbed from 616 in 2010/2011of a base of 3227 to 904 from 2482 in 2011/2012 while dog adoptions jumped from 582 to 846 from arrivals of 3119 and 2869 respectively.
