THE REGION’S waste management group has devised an alternative for Geelong residents demanding a hard rubbish collection.
Barwon Regional Waste Management Group’s Secondhand Saturdays will accept and recycle unwanted goods for free.
Group executive officer Enzo Bruscella said the initiative aimed to reduce dumping and rubbish going to landfill.
The group would partner City of Greater Geelong to collect waste such as electronic equipment, kitchen appliances, whitegoods and mobile phones.
“We all have cupboards and garages full of stuff we no longer need. Secondhand Saturday is the perfect opportunity to load up the car or trailer and drop it all off for free,” Mr Bruscella said.
A not-for-profit organisation employing people with disabilities would recycle some of the waste.
“GDP Industries will receive many of the goods, sell any re-sellable items and break down components of the rest for recycling,” Mr Bruscella said.
The first Secondhand Saturday will be next weekend at 135 Barwon Heads Rd, Belmont. Drysdale’s Potato Shed would be next on June 16 and council’s depot in Anakie Rd, Lovely Banks, would be last on June 30.
