Jan Juc’s India Robinson opened her 2017 World Surf League Australasian Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) campaign with a win at Bells Beach on Sunday.
Robinson surfed four-foot waves to victory over San Diego’s Alyssa Spencer.
“Winning at home means heaps to me,” Robinson said.
“Getting chaired up the beach at Bells Beach by my brother and Dad was one of the highlights of my career so far.”
Robinson used her local knowledge to beat the American in the final, which went right down to the wire.
She took the lead on the siren with her last wave to lock in a heat total of 11.10 points, ahead of Spencer’s 10.75.
“It was cool to have Alyssa in the final coming from the USA,” Robinson said. “She rips and is fun to surf against.”
“Being able to have heats at Bells is really special and allows me to get heaps of experience out here for future events.”
Spencer had the highest single wave of the final, an 8.00 point ride, but could not find a big enough back up to take the win.
The Subway Surf Series now moves to Cronulla in NSW for stop two in the series.
