Double Take

Congratulations to the local volunteers of Red Cross Barwon Zone 6, who celebrated the charity’s 100th anniversary in Geelong this week.
City Hall hosted a civic reception to mark the occasion, with members and dignatiries cutting a cake and chatting about the past century’s good work in the region.
Member Dorothy O’Donnell used the occasion to call on the “next generation” to keep the group thriving “for another 100 years”.
Now that’s a challenge, given that members of the incumbent generation have notched up as much as 70-plus years of continual service,

Not since Cadel Evans’ Gallic success has Geelong seen a local cyclist don the illustrious yellow jersey.
But for Independent managing editor Tony Galpin, seeing a namesake take the Tour de France race lead was something of a thrill.
Lotto-Belisol sprinter Tony Gallopin donned the meilleur jeune overnight Sunday in the stage nine leg between Gerardmer and Mulhouse, putting a Frenchman at the helm on France’s national Bastille Day.
Our Galpin’s take on matters? Unashamedly Aussie.
“Sacre bloody bleu!” he exclaimed.
“They spelled my name wrong.”

A large 12-wheeled crane truck was reversing out from the manicured gardens near the Waterfront skate park the other morning.
The recent rain left the soft soil in no position to cope with the weight of the truck or the size of its wheels, leaving a hapless council worker to clean up the mess.
“That bloke must be a terrible golfer,” a passer-by was heard to remark, “look at the divots he’s left!”

The level of publicity that Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons is attracting from Twitter has gone to his head – literally.
This week he dyed the social media giant’s logo beside his Mohawk for an appearance in the company’s Discover Your World promotion.
“I’m honoured to be recognised as one of Twitter’s must influential Australian users,” he declared.
Some were impressed.
“The mayor with the best hair. Keep up the great work, Darryn,” commented reader Sam below the Independent’s online story about the logo.
Less inspired were others, such as Peter Mobbs who repeated the mayor’s comment on the Indy’s Facebook page with a single-word response.
“Cough.”
