MPs spruik roads, Libs slam taxes

THE region’s federal Labor MPs have talked up spending on local roads in the Gillard Government’s budget this week.
Corangamite’s Darren Cheeseman highlighted $7 million for further duplication of the Princes Hwy between Wincheslea and Colac, while Corio’s Richard Marles touted $1 million for two black spots in his electorate.
Mr Cheeseman also raised a $12.5 million allocation to help fix the West Gate Fwy “car park”.
“While the Liberals throw money at eastern suburb road projects we are investing to ease the congestion at the end of the West Gate Fwy, Geelong’s road link to Melbourne.”
But Liberal opponents Sarah Henderson and Peter Read said Labor’s budget delivered “more debt, more deficits, more taxes, more broken promises and more uncertainty”.
Ms Henderson said Labor had “broken its word” again.
“They promised no carbon tax and a surplus. Instead we got a carbon tax, record deficits and in this budget Labor scrapped tax cuts, family payments and the baby bonus.”
Mr Read said only the coalition could restore Australia’s finances and help families “get ahead again”.
