Visitors pack the peninsula

Jessica Benton
THE BELLARINE Peninsula was awash with families holidaying at Easter with tourism operators reporting huge crowds had flocked to the coastlines over the long weekend.
Budget-conscious Melburnians and interstate travellers flocked to the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast to enjoy the wind up of the holiday period and a run of good weather.
Barwon Coast Committee of Management’s Bob Jordan, who manages the Ocean Grove Riverview Caravan Park and Barwon Heads Caravan Park, said some tourists had to be turned away over Easter.
“We were completely and utterly booked out, there wasn’t a blade of grass available,” he said.
Mr Jordan said those in need of accommodation used the nearby Rondor Caravan Park, which was enjoying its “last hurrah”, before an imminent closure to make way for residential development on the site.
Manager Charles Cutler said it was a “joy” to cater for the overflow of visitors.
“We were grateful they were sent to us because we’ll be closing down soon and it was just nice to see the park busy again,” he said.
Caravan parks, motels, B&Bs and holiday rental properties at Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Indented Head and St Leonards were also abuzz with holidaymakers.
