GEELONG’S new library heritage centre, pale purple carapace emerging from the green of Johnstone Park, strikes a contrast with concrete brutalism of the State Government Offices in this shot by Independent photographer Reg Ryan.
Construction on the $45.5 million structure is expected to reach water-tight stage by April as riggers, concretors, cladding and other contractors proceed on the seven-storey building.
Completion, scheduled for later this year, will be followed by a two-month installation period which will see the centre become a state-of-the-art library.
The centre will include 100,000 library collection items, exhibition and display areas, special collection and research rooms, a children’s exploration and discovery zone and reading room. Library visits are tipped to quadruple to one million visits a year within five years.
