Rower races to grant

Geelong boat builder Jeff Sykes and Associates will create 12 new jobs after receiving a new technology grant of $208,700 for specialised equipment to boost productivity and competitiveness.

Minister for Manufacturing David Hodgett said the company was Australia’s largest manufacturer of racing rowing boats, behind most of Australia’s Olympic and World Championship medals.

“Jeff Sykes and Associates will use the grant from the Coalition Government’s Investing in Manufacturing Technology (IMT) program to purchase advanced CNC milling and pasting technology,” Mr Hodgett said.

“This will allow the company to produce composite moulds, patterns and finished parts to advance existing Sykes products or enable diversification across multiple sectors within the composite materials industry – while also creating 12 new jobs.

“These grants are an excellent example of how new technology is helping to improve production processes, develop new skills, and take advantage of a range of innovative export opportunities.

“Victoria is the hub of Australia’s manufacturing industry but to meet the challenge of the high Australian dollar and competitive international markets, manufacturers must look to increase investment in new technology to remain competitive.”

IMT grants require a co-contribution of $3 for every $1 granted.
