City Hall’s major events unit will decide whether Geelong’s only major music festival goes ahead again next year, according to its organiser.
The return of Motor City Music Festival hinged on Geelong Major Events convincing the council to help fund the event again in 2017, Hugo T Armstrong said.
Thousands of patrons attended last weekend’s festival, which began on Friday night and culminated on Sunday with a family day.
The event at Geelong Showgrounds is the only large-scale music festival within urban Geelong.
The show relies heavily on local suppliers to deliver a diverse bill including rock, tribute, blues, country and children’s performers over several stages.
Mr Armstrong said Friday and Saturday attendance this year was on par with the first two festivals despite unpredictable weather but “the families just poured in” on Sunday.
He was generally happy with the support and confident the festival could grow in 2017 after establishing itself on the city’s events calendar over the past three years.
“We’ve done what we said we’d do, which was make a major music festival for Geelong. Now it’s up to Geelong Major Events,” Mr Armstrong said.
The Geelong Indy is a sponsor of Motor City Music Festival.
Indy managing editor Tony Galpin said the paper would be happy to support the event again in 2017.
“We’ve been behind Motor City since its debut in 2014.
“Hugo and his team put on a great show for Geelong and we’d be delighted to see it return next year,” Mr Galpin said.
