YOUNG people with disabilities and troubled backgrounds will join forces to create a new home for endangered bandicoots at Lara, according to Parks Victoria.
The department’s team leader for Serendip Sanctuary, Matt Wills, said the participants in a new Green Pathways program would learn skills help the reintroduction of eastern barred bandicoots.
Works would include maintaining animal enclosures, monitoring, fence repairs and controlling pests threatening breeding programs.
“One important thing they’ll be doing is replant- ing local native grasses in areas where the bandicoots are going to be released,” Mr Wills said.
“Their long-term survival is closely timed to having the right plans for their food, nesting and protection.”
Mr Wills said the 12 volunteer participants would work on the program one day a week for six months.
Mr Wills said the works would also help preserve other threatened species such as the Tasmanian pademelon and the brolga.
