A RELATIVELY unknown group will quietly reach a 45-year milestone next month but the members of Geelong Deaf Social Group would like more people to hear all about its achievement.
Secretary Valmai Claxton said three female friends formed the group as Geelong Deaf Auxiliary in 1968 only to find their meetings attracted more deaf men than women.
“So they changed their name to Geelong Deaf Social Group and it proved popular among the deaf because they could go out during the day,” Ms Claxton said.
“The deaf can come along and immerse themselves in deaf culture and language – AUSLAN. Hearing people are welcome to attend and learn to sign, too.
“Our members meet to share their lives with one another; for some this is the only opportunity they have to be with other deaf people.”
The group’s 45th anniversary celebration will feature a blue and white theme.
