A BURIED sea mine surprised excavator operators at a Leopold housing estate on Tuesday, according to police.
Geelong Police Sergeant Mandy Baker said workers dug up the mine during works at the Estuary housing development to the surprise of the site’s previous owner.
“They’ve hit a solid object and grabbed it out only to realise it was a rusted out, hollow bomb,” she said.
“We made a few enquiries and the original owner of the land had used it as a milk cooling system.”
Sgt Baker described the discovery as a “one off.”
The 58-hectare estate, off Melaluka Road, will house about 2400 residents, according to the developer’s website.
