Salsa Solstice with Cuban flavour

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

The hot-blooded rhythms of Cuba will help Geelong dancers banish the winter blues at Geelong’s second annual Salsa Solstice.
Club La Vida Salsa Geelong will again stage the popular event to bring energetic members out of hibernation, dancing to the tempos of Melbourne-based Cuban band, Carino Son.
Club president Sonja Sanderson said the 24 June event would celebrate this year’s winter solstice, falling on 21 June.
“Salsa Solstice presents a unique opportunity to celebrate the winter solstice with a hot night of Cuban salsa music, culture and dancing,” Sanderson said.
“With the support of our flourishing local salsa community, beginners can experience the intoxicating energy of Cuban salsa along with Latin music lovers from within our multi-cultural community.
“Last year’s Salsa Solstice event was an outstanding success, so due to popular demand, it’s on again.”
Salsa Solstice 2016 will feature six-piece combo Carino Son, with a play-list of rhythmic Cuban music, reminiscent of the Buena Vista Social Club.
“Local salsa dance enthusiasts will flock to this special event, which makes for fascinating entertainment, in addition to the captivating music,” Sanderson said.
“This event is open to anyone who would like to experience a rare opportunity to hear the sounds and rhythms of Cuba – live, right here in Geelong.
“Last year’s Salsa Solstice attracted a broad cross-section of people from Geelong and Melbourne, including some great dancers, some who’ve never tried salsa before, and some who were drawn to hear Cuban music.
“As a volunteer-run club, it’s so rewarding to get a huge turnout to our live gigs, and fantastic positive feedback about the friendly hospitality we extend to everyone.”
Sanderson said the event promised to be a high energy night of great music, friendly atmosphere and loads of fun.
Salsa Solstice begins 7.30pm to midnight at The Seaview Club, 335 Bluestone Bridge Road, Lovely Banks.
