Education Week: Matthew Flinders encouraging girls

ALL students at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College are encouraged to think deeply by being open-minded, curious, strategic, sceptical and through seeking truth and understanding.
This key focus of their learning experience and is supported by a number of programs accessed through tertiary and corporate partnerships.
The school recently joined a Successful Students – STEM program, part of a Skilling the Bay initiative, in partnership with Deakin University.
As a forward-looking learning community, Matthew Flinders wants to continue encouraging its girls to consider digital, scientific and mathematical pathway options. The exciting program will complement the college’s existing curriculum to help students develop skills relevant to the jobs of the future.
The program aims to strengthen their engagement with the school’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
The college is continuing to build its digital technology curriculum, recently confirming a partnership with Intel. The partnership offers the use of Intel’s Galileo Gen 2 development board, giving students access to state-of-the-art technology.
The digital technology curriculum teaches students to be creators with technology rather than just consumers.
Matthew Flinders students will share their digital expertise and skills during the college’s first Maker-Faire, offering workshops for around 100 primary students that will encourage them to create, craft, build and play.
Centrally located in Lt Ryrie St, Geelong, the college is easily accessed by bus or train.
More information and enrolment enquiries are available by phoning 4243 0500 or visiting mfgsc.vic.edu.au.
