Sex, nudie ads our big gripes

Sexy ads bug Geelong people more than the average Australian, new figures suggest.
Advertising Standards Bureau said the use of sex and nudity was behind Geelong complaint rates up to three times the national average.
The bureau said almost 38 per cent of its Geelong ad complaints in 2013 were about sexy content.
The national average was 23 per cent.
Sex and nudity was the biggest source of ad complaints nationally and in the Geelong region, the bureau said.
Geelong was also a hotbed of concern about discrimination and vilification in advertising, which accounted for 25 per cent of the region’s complaints compared to the national average of 18 per cent.
Internet and social media ads were also an issue for Geelong.
The bureau said Geelong people were twice as likely to complain about internet ads and three times more likely to grumble about social media advertising.
However, television remained the number-one source of angst, generating 60 per cent of the region’s complaints.
The bureau said Highton residents complained the most, accounting for 13 per cent of complaints from the region.
Torquay and Grovedale were next with 10 per cent each, followed by Barwon Heads and Lara at seven per cent.
Bureau chief executive officer Fiona Jolly said the overall number of complaints from the region was “relatively low” but she encouraged consumers to lodge complaints on the bureau’s website.
“If the complaint falls within the codes the board will decide whether to dismiss or uphold the complaint,” she said.
