AN HISTORIC Catholic church in the heart of Bannockburn has been badly damaged in a fire overnight.
Fire crews were called to the weatherboard church in High Street at about 4.15am and found it engulfed in flames on arrival.
Incident Controller Barry Planner said it took crews around one hour to bring the fire under control.
“This church was over 100 years old and crews did an excellent job of containing the fire,” he said.
Police treated the area as a crime scene overnight and placed a guard on the property.
Fire investigators will attend the scene today to determine a cause.
Four trucks from Corio, Lethbridge and Bannockburn attended.
