Torquay man’s fiery death ‘suspicious’, say police

ERIN PEARSON
POLICE are investigating whether foul play was behind the death of a Torquay man found in a burnt-out car west of Geelong on Tuesday night.
Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter said police were treating the death of 55-year-old Mark Scherini as suspicious pending the outcome of an autopsy.
Mr Scherini was last seen leaving his Geelong workplace around 10am. His 2008 Mazda CX9 was found alight in a car park at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir.
Insp Potter said the Mantzaris Fisheries executive was supposed to attend a meeting at 11am.
“We’re appealing for anyone with information that may have seen any activity in the vicinity of the Wurdee Boluc Reservoir. We’re also interested in any one who may have information on the movements of Mr Scherini during the day.”
Insp Potter said police had no information suggesting Mr Scherini was involved in any disputes or would commit suicide.
“We believe the fire was deliberately lit and we’ve had crime scene examiners at the scene searching the vicinity of the car park to locate anything that might help us with this investigation.”
Investigations were continuing when the Independent went to press on Wednesday.
Police urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crime stoppers.com.au.
