Taxi driver set for ‘raft of charges’

A Geelong taxi driver who allegedly wrecked the car of egg-throwing youths after instigating a high-speed chase will face a “raft of serious charges”, according to Corio police.
Senior constable Aaron Riches expected the 42-year-old Hamlyn Heights resident to face charges including “conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury, driving in a dangerous manner, driving at a dangerous speed, careless driving and criminal damage”.
He said police were still investigating the incident, which started in Ryrie Street on May 1.
He expected the driver, Alan Dengler to appear in front of Geelong Magistrate’s Court next month.
“Based on the evidence so far I think being charged is a foregone conclusion,” Sgt Riches told the Independent.
“His driving was calculated, deliberate and reckless – his desire to apprehend these kids has taken over any regard to other road users.”
He said six witnesses had contacted police to make formal statements in relation to the alleged attack.
“We’ve been able to identify members of the public who have seen his manner of driving while chasing the youths and have made statements to police,” he said.
The “serious” allegations would take four to six weeks to investigate, he said.
“We take the matter very seriously that is why a thorough investigation will occur,” Sgt Riches said.
Police said Mr Dengler chased four males after an egg was thrown at his car.
Police allege the driver took a tyre lever from his taxi and smashed the youth’s car.
Last week the Independent revealed the incident had “uncovered” a range of “concerns” for drivers.
Geelong Taxi Network chief executive officer Peter Valentine urged authorities to improve safety for drivers to avoid incidents spiralling out of control.
“Many drivers face unacceptable and unsavoury experiences with passengers who choose to treat drivers with little respect for the job they are performing and, accordingly, drivers find they’re on guard at all times,” Mr Valentine said.
