Swap meet is top event

Greg Wane
Fred Harris has been told the Bay City Swap Meet is one of the best run meets in Victoria.
He is humble about the praise, but most of 4000 people who attended last Saturday’s event at Geelong Showgrounds would probably agree.
Fred is the president of Geelong’s Western District Historic Vehicle Club and together with about 230 club members start planning six months out from the meet that attracts more than 500 trading sites that cover the entire showgrounds arena.
“There’s a lot of things to put in place to run an event like this,” Fred said as he sipped coffee during a break on Saturday. “There’s all sorts of permits and promotion to be done.
It’s the club’s major annual fundraiser.”
Fred said the club had been organising the event for the past 13 years.
Buyers and sellers from many regions in Victoria were at the showgrounds from 7am on Saturday to hunt through the hundreds of stalls selling and swapping car and bike parts, auto books and memorabilia.
