Bloody funny

Alex de Vos
Kevin Bloody Wilson has used every expletive possible but the larrikin Australian comedian says he has never been booed off stage.
“There have been a few instances when the audience has gone a little quiet, though – like the time I made a reference to a Western Australian policeman in one of my shows,” Wilson told the Independent over the phone from New Zealand amid his international DILLIGAF tour.
Apparently the policeman had been caught in a compromising position with an animal.
“The policeman was everyone’s mate, his kids went to the local school – it was a bit of a sensitive topic. Sometimes you have to be a bit sensitive,” Wilson observed.
“But over in the next town it was all right to use the joke.”
To ensure his performances flow smoothly, Wilson said he asked audiences to do research before attending one of his shows.
“I think that’s the reason I’ve never been booed off stage,” Wilson said.
“People know what they’re going to get and, if they don’t like it, then don’t come along.”
Wilson, labelled “the world’s funniest Australian”, has been spreading his dirty ballads around the world for 25 years.
“It started out as a hobby,” he revealed.
“When I was living in Kalgoorlie I was playing in a band and we used to de-construct other people’s songs.
“After a while we found they were getting more response than the original versions.
“My mates said I should record my songs. They nudged me into it and finally I got around to doing it.”
Within a week of his cassettes hitting Australian shelves, Wilson had sold nearly all 100 copies.
“I didn’t expect that,” he admitted.
“But, then again, we all like a good dirty joke every now and then and we all laugh at fart jokes.
“Life is just too serious sometimes – you need a bit of humour.”
Following his tour of New Zealand, Wilson will perform at North Geelong’s The Sphinx on May 30.
Wilson said the show would feature classics including You Can’t Say **** In Canada and Livin’ Next Door To Alan.
“But I never go out with the same show twice – I just change the name.”
