Geelong road commuters will save 20 minutes travelling to Melbourne after a State Government commitment to go it alone on funding a second Yarra River crossing, Premier Daniel Andrews has announced.
The Government had signed a deal with Transurban to build the $1.5-billion Western Distributor project despite failing to secure Commonwealth funding, Mr Andrews said.
Torquay ‘unprotected’
Torquay was “unprotected” amid an influx of tourists on Easter Saturday and Monday after the town’s police station closed for its day-shift, state parliament has heard.
South Barwon MP Andrew Katos asked why the station closed while also querying why police had slashed Geelong divisional van rosters from three a day to one.

A Geelong woman will cut off her floor-length hair grown over 15 years to raise money for Suicide Prevention Australia.
Carina Henry (pictured), who has a fundraising page at everydayhero.com.au, said she wanted to raise $5000 for the charity and also donate her hair to make wigs for children who had been left bald through illness.
Suburb growth
Fyansford will grow with a new residential development if a City of Greater Geelong planning change wins a go-ahead.
City Hall wants to re-align the suburb boundary between Fyansford and Herne Hill, with the new alignment running along the rear of properties in Graylea Avenue.
Thai sticky
A 21-member Thai delegation will tour its investment in a $100 million Geelong waterfront development today (Friday), according to the project’s public relations agency.
Supalai chairman Prateep Tangmatitham and his 20 board representatives would inspect Balmoral Quay while touring the company’s Victorian investments and considering other “opportunities” in the state, the agency said.
Apprentices loaned
Geelong apprentices are signing up for new federal loans to help finish their trade training, according to Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson.
More than 1030 apprentices had secured Trade Support Loans in the region, giving Corangamite and Corio the fifth and third highest numbers of participants nationally, she said.
