Reality checks were the order of the weekend’s AFL games, with big margins abounding almost everywhere.
The closest game was 23 points and Geelong did its bit to add to the collection of percentage boosts with its 75 point thumping of West Coast.
Coach Chris Scott had been hoping for some firmer indicators coming up against a fellow unbeaten side, but was doomed to disappointment on that score.
It did however give the back half the opportunity to show how well it could click, especially with Jared Rivers playing his best game since upgrading to Geelong.
Scott was impressed by the defensive effort.
“They didn’t kick a goal from stoppages which is a pretty remarkable performance considering the quality of their big guys.
“I didn’t think we would keep them to the score we did after quarter time,” he admitted.
“It’s a little hard to get a read on it. Obviously it was a good performance but the opposition were decimated in terms of personnel.
“It is still too early in the season to draw conclusions, I would have thought.
“We don’t feel like we are on top of your game but we’ll soon find out, won’t we? Everyone that plays the Hawks has a clearer picture of where they are at.”
The Easter Monday blockbuster against Hawthorn at the MCG is now the focus, the nine day break giving defender Andrew Mackie time to shake off tightness in a hamstring.
