Vote Jarvis or council could be sacked, warns Costa

GEELONG council could be sacked by the State Government if Liberal-backed Ken Jarvis is not voted mayor, Frank Costa has reportedly warned.

The Age today reported that Mr Costa said that, on hearing of outgoing mayor Keith Fagg’s intention to resign in August, he spoke to Premier Denis Napthine and asked him to allow another election, assuring him he and his business friends would find a suitable candidate. He said he understood the election proceeded on the basis of that assurance.

But Mr Costa warned that if Mr Jarvis was not elected, the Government could intervene and appoint an administrator at Geelong.

”I believe the state government will not muck around,” he was reported as saying.

Mr Costa has been helping fund an advertising campaign in support of Mr Jarvis. He conceded to The Age that Mr Lyons had taken the mayoral contest by surprise.

”I don’t understand that social media thing,” the said, acknowledging that ”Darryn represents change more than anyone else [in the mayoral race]”.

Mr Jarvis also reportedly conceded that at this point, Mr Lyons was probably the favourite to win.
