GEELONG’S council has baulked at paying almost $80,000 toward a state-wide campaign for constitutional recognition of local government.
Councillors voted this week to launch their own campaign rather than participate in the Municipal Association of Victoria push.
The association wanted Geelong to contribute $79,286, based on population and revenue.
Constitutional recognition would help councils tap Commonwealth funding but critics fear Canberra would gain extra control over local government.
