Rescuers had to cut three injured people from a wrecked car at Marcus Hill on Wednesday, according to Victoria Police.
A police spokesperson said an air ambulance carried the “very seriously injured” driver to Melbourne for treatment.
Ambulances took the two passengers and the driver of the second vehicle, a van, to Geelong Hospital with “moderate” injuries.
The spokesperson said police believed the car was heading west on Bellarine Highway when it struck water and lost control before colliding with the van heading east at 12.10pm.
The police spokesperson said officers were “compiling a report” when the Independent went to press.
A Country Fire Authority spokesperson said CFA workers had to cut the passengers out of the car.
The CFA spokesperson said the car victims were aged from 19 to in their 40s. The van driver was also aged in his 40s.
The accident shut down the Bellarine Highway for about an hour and a half while CFA staff worked to free the trapped passengers, the spokesperson said.
Police diverted traffic to Banks Road before reopening the highway at 1.56pm.
