Pets, owners step out for fundraiser

ORGANISERS expect over 1500 people and 800 dogs to help raise money for animal welfare this weekend in Geelong.
Kirsty Ayerbe said she was preparing for another smooth event during the annual Million Paws Walk despite the mix of participants.
“I’ve been saying to people over the past week that we’ve never had any issues, no fights no bites,” she laughed.
“Dogs get this sense that they’re at an event and just love to check each other out. It’s quite incredible to have so many dogs in the one spot at once and they seem to have a better time than their owners.”
The walk has raised almost $100,000 since its inception in 2004.
“It’s been a challenge to get his up and running but I love being involved in the community,” Ayerbe said.
“I love the fact the volunteers on the day give their time without question because they’re just so willing to help.
Last year we raised $20,000 for RSPCA, which was the biggest to date and this year we’re aiming for a few thousand more.”
Ayerbe said proceeds would go to Geelong’s RSPCA inspectors, community education programs and animal shelters.
She encouraged the city’s 17,234 registered pet owners to participate.
The day would include on-site microchipping, free pet advice, entertainment, raffles, spot prizes, refreshments, stalls and demonstrations, she said.
The walk would run from 10am at Eastern Gardens on Sunday, with registrations from 9am.
