Communities unite over family’s loss

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

THE sadness of a tragedy almost a year ago is being softened as the communities of Mt Duneed and Winchelsea join forces in a family fun day.
The Morgan family lost wife and mother Michelle when she collapsed on her 28th birthday from a lung clot. She died three days later without regaining consciousness.
Devastated husband Dale and their three young daughters were left behind.
Dale’s father, Geoff Morgan, said family connections in both communities led to them raising money for play equipment, a playroom and other gifts for the children.
The outpouring of care and concern has now inspired a family fun day at Winchelsea Golf Club this weekend.
“The day has gained such strong support from the community, clubs and organisations in Winchelsea and all of Geelong, really,” Geoff said.
Community groups will put on displays and stalls along with an array of children’s amusements and rides.
A six-hole celebrity golf challenge and a hole-in-one competition, featuring radio and television personality John Blackman, and a charity auction will provide further entertainment.
Bands including Audemedia, Kite Machine, Good Faces for Radio and popular children’s act Mic Maks will perform.
Blues and roots musician Tim Hulsman, who organised the line-up, was “stoked” about the collection of local talent.
“They’ve never been all together like that but they were all happy to jump on board. The musos around here are community-minded.
“It’s a heart-wrenching situation but we all know people whose lives have been put into hard spots, so everyone’s happy to help.”
The family fun day will run from 10.30am to 7.30pm Sunday at Winchelsea Golf Club.
