Leg injuries after car hits tree

By Luke Voogt

A 44-year-old Clifton Springs woman has narrowly avoided death after rolling her car on the Portarlington Highway at Moolap on Saturday afternoon.
The woman was driving towards Geelong in her white Hyundai Excel when she drove onto the median strip near the Moolap Station Road intersection.
A dashcam video posted on social media shows the car slamming into a tree before rolling back onto the highway on its roof.
The impact flung the car’s rear door open scattering debris over the road.
Earlier witnesses spotted the woman driving erratically on Portarlington Highway in Leopold, Geelong Highway Patrol’s Senior Constable David Ramm said.
Sen Const Ramm said a number of vehicles were driving behind the woman, including on an off-duty policeman.
They followed the woman when they noticed she was unable to stay in her lane, he said.
Paramedics treated the woman, who lost consciousness for a short time after the accident.
She regained consciousness soon after and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with serious leg injuries.
A hospital spokesperson said the woman was in a stable condition.
“She was trapped in the car for 45 minutes before the CFA and SES cut her out,” Sen Const Ramm said.
“Her injuries were never life-threatening but once they’re in the car for a certain period of time its protocol to call the helicopter in.”
Sen Const Ramm could not say at this stage if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
He said police were investigating the incident and awaiting blood tests from the hospital.
