Work began on Deakin University’s $50 million accommodation project on Friday 9 December, and is expected to house 410 new student residents in 2018.
The 11-storey building has a u-shaped, north-facing design to maximise natural light. According to Deakin’s website, its construction will create about 200 jobs.
It includes a ground-floor architectural workshop, and will be ready in time for students to move into by the start of the 2018 academic year.
Planning Minister Richard Wynne, Geelong MP Christine Couzens and Deakin University Vice Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander were on site Friday to mark the start of works.
Mr Wynne highlighted the need to encourage more accommodation for students close to the CBD to support Deakin University’s growing numbers.
“We’re encouraging development, the market is responding and there are shovels in the ground.”
Mr Wynne granted approval for the project a few weeks ago.
