Watchdog in forum drive

By Cherie Donnellan
RESIDENTS will use a Torquay ward candidates forum next week to establish a council watchdog group, according to an organiser of the event.
Jan Juc’s Sue O’Shanassy issued a public invitation to join the new 3228 Residents Association at the October 16 forum.
The association would ensure the next Surf Coast council upheld “democracy and transparency”, she said.
Residents attending the forum would be encouraged to question candidates on their policies and political affiliations during a 30-minute question time.
“I will be asking about councillors’ political ties, past or present, and whether they intend to run for further office (state or federal),” Ms O’Shanassy said.
Jan Juc’s Sid Pope will chair the candidates forum, beginning 8pm at Torquay Senior Citizens Centre.
“Candidates will get five minutes each to address the community with their policies, and we’ll be very strict about keeping to that time,” Mr Pope said.
Mr Pope would serve as president of the residents’ association, which was preparing for incorporation, he said.
“I’ll be asking candidates to disclose any campaign contributions prior to the election as well as what skills they’d bring to council.”
