Street art chalks up a surprise

By CHERIE DONNELLAN

MANY tried and failed to pull legendary sword Excalibur from its stone resting place – just like this 3D chalk radish set into the Lt Malop St pavement.
3D chalk artist Rudy Kistler appears the only one with the magic behind the creation – but he encouraged people to try anyway.
Market Square shoppers lined up this week to pose with the 3D drawings of a radish, a cup of coffee and a cupcake – all drawn by Mr Kistler to celebrate the Taste of Central Geelong festival.
The New South Wales-based artist, formerly from Chicago in the United States, has travelled the country drawing for companies including Nokia, Coca Cola and Luftansa airlines.
Despite having a masters degree in fine art – exhibiting and selling many of his oil paintings Australia-wide – Mr Kistler said his chalk art was the most talked-about.
“Street art, or chalk art, is great for interacting with the public because it’s there and it’s quirky.
“People used to think it was just something buskers did but now people aren’t afraid to appreciate different forms of art.”
