LOCAL surfers have enjoyed a hot start to a cold winter, with quality waves pounding the region’s coastline.
Wave faces peaked around five metres earlier this week at breaks such as Bells Beach and neighbouring Winkipop as experienced surfers took on the big swell, risking horror wipeouts for the thrill of riding some of Australia’s best waves.
This big swell capped a weeks-long run of excellent surf, interspersed with some less-favourable days that offered tired bodies a chance to rest and recover.
Surf forecasters predict smaller but smooth conditions over the next few days, ideal for beginners.
