The search for Geelong’s next musical prodigy begins this month, with auditions for Highton Rotary’s Star Search.
Australian music icon Missy Higgins won in 2000, while several other winners went on to successful music or theatre careers.
Organiser Stephen Bath was looking forward to finding the next local star.
“We have a lot of untapped potential in Geelong,” he said.
“The adjudicators, many of whom work in Melbourne’s music industry, are always amazed at our talent – they have quite a hard job.”
Mr Bath said Star Search entries usually varied from “rock guitarists” to “classical pianists”.
“There’s a mix of competitors from all walks of life.
“This is an opportunity to perform with professional sound and lighting and outside what entrants are used to.”
Highton’s St Luke’s Church will host Star Search vocal auditions on Wednesday 26 April and instrumentalists on Wednesday 3 May.
Finals will be at Sacred Heart College’s McAuley Hall on 27 May.
Highton Rotary is offering $1000 prizes for the winners for the four categories for soloists and groups in either vocal or instrumental performances.
The overall winner will receive an extra $300, with other cash prizes also up for grabs.
