A GROUP of high school students from Geelong’s northern suburbs will see snow for the first time as part of a leadership camp this year.
North Geelong Secondary College transition and pathways leader Josh Baker said the 20 year nine and 10 students would pay only $160 each for three days at Falls Creek.
Mr Baker said $5000 for the trip from Shell Community Grants would help the students enjoy experiences otherwise unavailable to them.
“The demographic they come from on this side of town haven’t had that opportunity. We’ve been able to offer the camp to our most outstanding men and women without their parents having the dilemma of the huge cost over their heads.”
Mr Baker said staff offered camp places to 10 boys and 10 girls embodying the school’s values of respect, achievement, excellence and diversity.
“It’s a real spread of kids who have shown excellent academic or sporting performance and an ability to lead their peers and be a role model.”
Mr Baker said the students would stay at an outdoor education centre in Bogong Village, learning cross-country and downhill skiing.
They would also participate in organised leadership activities.
Mr Baker said the students would run a leadership project with junior students when they returned.
He hoped the camp would become a regular event for North Geelong students.
